Chimera
FAQ
1) What kind of music is played at Chimera?
Industrial, gothic, electro/aggro-industrial, EBM, synthpop/futurepop, darkwave, mediaeval, and occasionally dark ambient in the early evening. Gothic/viking metal and powernoise are also played on rare occasions but the DJ does not specialize in these genres. Bands commonly played include: ASP, Assemblage 23, The Birthday Massacre, Blutengel, Combichrist, Cultus Ferox, Die Krupps, Eisbrecher, Grendel, In Extremo, KMFDM, Rammstein, Rotersand, Sisters of Mercy, Skinny Puppy, Soil & Eclipse, Suicide Commando, Tactical Sekt, VnV Nation, :wumpscut:
2) What is the crowd like at Chimera?
So far, the regular Thursday Chimera has generally attracted around 70-100 people over the course of the night, and over 100 is a typical number for Saturday events. Our crowd ranges from goths and rivetheads to art students and miscellaneous black-clad others. The event has no dress code and is intended to be open to all those who enjoy music from the genres in question, regardless of appearance or degree of subcultural devotion.
3) Who is the DJ?
The DJ is DJ Jinx, who is also the event organizer. She has been DJing in the goth-industrial scene since 2001, and has been running Chimera since 2006. She is also the organizer of Hydra, but is not that event's sole DJ. Both of these events were previously at Soda, and now take place at Quincy's. Jinx is not on Facebook or on Myspace, but can be contacted at this e-mail address. She can also be found on Twitter as @Jinx_Disruption
4) What is the door policy?
Cover for regular Chimera events is $5. This cover applies to all attendees with the exception of staff, e.g. door helpers and guest DJs. Since guest DJing is unpaid at this time, free entry for a small party of the guest DJ's friends may be negotiated in some circumstances, e.g. if both the guest DJ and those accompanying him/her are from out of town and arrangements are made in advance with DJ Jinx. Business partners of Quincy's will be admitted freely when they are there to discuss matters with the owner, and "free entry passes" may be made available to select individuals on some occasions. However, there is no "guest list," i.e. free entry based solely on claims of "I know so-and-so." Deceptive attempts to gain entry without paying cover will not be tolerated.
5) Why has regular cover gone up?
The sole reason for raising cover from $4 to $5 is to transition from having volunteer door staff to paid door staff.
6) Why is cover higher at special events - what happened to having tickets?
We have found that relatively few people purchase tickets for special events rather than paying at the door. Therefore, it does not make sense to waste money on printing tickets, paying a commission to stores to sell them, etc. Please note that higher cover at special events reflects the additional effort these events require from the DJ and door helpers, as well as funding prizes.
7) People are being mean to me on the facebook group. Who can I complain to?
DJ Jinx is not on facebook, and is thus not affiliated with the facebook group for Chimera. Furthermore, it should be understood that opinions exchanged on the facebook group do not necessarily reflect the views of the DJ/event organizer. Please contact the facebook admins if you have a problem.
8) Why the 'no swastikas at military-themed events' rule?
Because while we appreciate the appeal of fascist imagery in the industrial scene, swastikas seem to cross the line between appreciating an aesthetic and supporting an ideology that many people find highly offensive. Even if you personally do not see things this way, please take into consideration how you may be presenting your scene to outsiders.
9) I'm in an industrial/gothic band - can I play a show at Chimera sometime?
Chimera is a DJ/dance-oriented event rather than a live music event. Please contact DJ Jinx and she will look into booking a Hydra date for your show. An advantage of this arrangement is that your concert can be promoted during the Chimera events.
10) What is the guest DJ policy at Chimera?
While the primary DJ for Chimera is DJ Jinx, there may be guest DJs on occasion, particularly at special events. In such cases, the DJs will switch after every five songs and DJ Jinx will focus on the opposite genre of the guest DJs (e.g. industrial if they are gothic-specialized, and gothic if they are industrial-specialized) in order to maintain the overall genre balance at Chimera. At this time, we would prefer not to have guest DJs who specialize in genres that most people find undanceable, e.g. ethereal goth, experimental noise, black metal, etc. Please also note that at this time, guest DJing at Chimera is on a volunteer basis unless other terms are explicitly agreed to, whereas guest DJing at Hydra is paid.
11) Why don't you answer my e-mail messages?
DJ Jinx is also a university professor, and her workload occasionally results in poor response times. Nonetheless, she appreciates your feedback; apologies if she fails to get back to you promptly.
