1) What kind of music is played at Discordia?
Primarily retro 80s and 90s, new wave, alternative rock, industrial, gothic, electro/aggro-industrial, EBM, and synthpop. Bands commonly played include: Assemblage 23, Blondie, The B-52s, Combichrist, Covenant, The Cure, Dead or Alive, Depeche Mode, Eurythmics, Funker Vogt, Marilyn Manson, Men Without Hats, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, Rammstein, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy, Soft Cell, Suicide Commando, VnV Nation.
2) What is the crowd like at Discordia?
The two primary audiences that Discordia is aimed at are: 1) individuals who identify as goth, industrial, rivet, cyber, etc., who wish that Chimera was on weekends; and 2) individuals who enjoy dressing up in retro 80s and 90s fashions and dancing to a wide variety of music.
3) Who is the DJ?
The DJ is DJ Jinx, who is also the event organizer. She has been DJing in the goth-industrial scene since 2001, and has been running Chimera since 2006. Her other events include Chimera, an industrial/gothic event on the last Thursday of each month; Hydra, an event on the second Wednesday of each month that features different "dark" DJs and bands each month; and Conspiracy, an all-ages industrial/gothic/metal event. All of these events take place at Soda. She is not on Facebook or on Myspace, but can be contacted at this e-mail address.
4) What is the door policy?
Cover for Discordia events is $8. This cover applies to all attendees with the exception of staff, e.g. door helpers and guest DJs. Since guest DJing is unpaid at this time, free entry for a small party of the guest DJ's friends may be negotiated in some circumstances, e.g. if both the guest DJ and those accompanying him/her are from out of town and arrangements are made in advance with DJ Jinx. Business partners of Soda will be admitted freely when they are there to discuss matters with the owner, and "free entry passes" may be made available to select individuals on some occasions. However, there is no "guest list," i.e. free entry based solely on claims of "I know so-and-so." Deceptive attempts to gain entry without paying cover will not be tolerated.
5) Why is cover higher at this event than DJ Jinx's other events? What is the deal with the free drink coupons?
Because a) it's on the weekend, hence is more work for everyone involved, and b) cover includes a free drink for the first 23 people in the door. (We previously had free drink tickets for everyone, but this has proved to be too expensive, so if you badly want a free drink ticket, come early.)
6) People are being mean to me on the facebook group. Who can I complain to?
DJ Jinx is not on facebook, and is thus not affiliated with the facebook group for Discordia. Furthermore, it should be understood that opinions exchanged on the facebook group do not necessarily reflect the views of the DJ/event organizer. Please contact the facebook admins if you have a problem.
7) I'm in a band - can I play a show at Discordia sometime?
Discordia is a DJ/dance-oriented event rather than a live music event. Please contact DJ Jinx and she will look into booking a Hydra date for your show. An advantage of this arrangement is that your concert can be promoted during the Chimera events.
8) What is the guest DJ policy at Discordia?
While the primary DJ for Discordia is DJ Jinx, there may be guest DJs on occasion. In such cases, the DJs will switch after every five songs and DJ Jinx will focus on the opposite genre of the guest DJs (e.g. retro if they are industrial/ gothic-specialized, and industrial/gothic if they are retro-specialized) in order to maintain the overall genre balance at Discordia. Please note that at this time, guest DJing is on a volunteer basis unless other terms are explicitly agreed to.
9) Why don't you answer my e-mail messages?
DJ Jinx is also a graduate student / university lecturer, and her workload occasionally results in poor response times. Nonetheless, she appreciates your feedback; apologies if she fails to get back to you promptly.
