1) What kind of music is played at Hydra?
Hydra's music selection varies depending on the guest DJs and bands playing in any given month, so please see current listings for information. Although the event is industrial-focused, from time to time there may also be guest DJs or bands who have gothic or metal elements.
2) How is Hydra different from Chimera?
Hydra offers live music as well as DJs. Additionally, the DJing style is different at Hydra than at Chimera. At Chimera, DJ Jinx aspires to change genres every 15 minutes or so, whereas at Hydra you are more likely to hear the same genre for longer periods of time. More importantly, Jinx is not the sole or primary DJ of Hydra, and when she does DJ at Hydra, she will specialize in a particular genre for the time that she is in the booth, rather than switch as often as she does with Chimera.
3) Who is the organizer?
DJ Jinx is the organizer but she is not the primary DJ of Hydra. She has been DJing in the goth-industrial scene since 2001, and has been running Chimera since 2006. She is not on Facebook or on Myspace, but can be contacted at this e-mail address. She can also be found on Twitter as @Jinx_Disruption
4) What is the door policy?
Cover for regular Hydra events is $5. This cover applies to all attendees with the exception of staff, e.g. door helpers and guest DJs. Business partners of Quincy's will be admitted freely when they are there to discuss matters with the owner, and "free entry passes" may be made available to select individuals on some occasions. However, there is no "guest list," i.e. free entry based solely on claims of "I know so-and-so." Deceptive attempts to gain entry without paying cover will not be tolerated. Cover for Hydra events at which bands are playing is normally $10, and is again applicable to all attendees who are not staff (e.g. band members, sound techs, etc.). On rare occasions, some concerts may have higher cover depending on the bands playing, and if so, this will be advertised in advance.
5) Why is cover higher when bands are playing?
If a band is on tour, they have additional expenses that must be met. That said, the cover charged at Hydra tends to be significantly lower than that charged at many other concert venues. We thus encourage those who enjoy the live bands to further support them by purchasing CDs and merchandise from the bands in question.
6) People are being mean to me on the facebook group. Who can I complain to?
DJ Jinx is not on facebook, and is thus not affiliated with the facebook group for Hydra. Furthermore, it should be understood that opinions exchanged on the facebook group do not necessarily reflect the views of the DJ/event organizer. Please contact the facebook admins if you have a problem.
7) I'm in a band - can I play a show at Hydra sometime?
We are always looking for bands to play at Hydra, so please contact DJ Jinx and she will look into booking a date for your show. An advantage of this arrangement is that your concert can be promoted during the Chimera events. Please note however that DJ Jinx has final say on all bands selected for Hydra, and will not necessarily approve all requests, especially for bands whose primary genre is not industrial. Payment for a show at Hydra is as follows: for every $10 of cover charged, $5 goes to the band(s), $1 to the organizer, $1 to door people, $1 to the in-house sound person, $1 to the bar, and $1 to the DJ who plays during set up and tear down. Please note that the default expectation is that if two local bands play at Hydra they will divide the "band share" equally between them (e.g. for every 10 people who pay cover, $25 goes to each band), but if one band is from out of town and one is local, the out-of-towner should receive a larger portion of the band share in order to cover their costs. Also, if two bands are touring together, they may make other arrangements between one another with regard to how to split the band share. No more than two bands will be booked for any Hydra event.
8) What is the guest DJ policy at Hydra?
As with bands, please contact DJ Jinx and she will book a date for you to play. Guest DJs for Hydra will be booked for one of three slots: early (9-10:30), prime (10:30-12) or late (12:00-close). DJ Jinx has final say over who gets what timeslot, but by all means please inquire if you would prefer one over another or if you have time restrictions that prevent you from taking a certain slot. (Note: prime slot favoritism will be granted to those playing more danceable genres; we welcome DJs who want to play genres such as powernoise or gothic metal, but you are more likely to be given the late or early timeslot in that case.) The bar receives $1 from every $5 of cover charged, and the remainder of cover profits are then divided into fifths and distributed equally amongst the following parties: event organizer, early DJ, prime DJ, late DJ, door people. So for example, if 50 people come to the event, a guest DJ will get paid $40 per timeslot. If bands are playing, only one guest DJ will be hired for the entire night; see #7 for the profit-sharing arrangement in this case. DJs are expected to have their own equipment and cables.
9) Why don't you answer my e-mail messages?
DJ Jinx is also a university professor, and her workload occasionally results in poor response times. Nonetheless, she appreciates your feedback; apologies if she fails to get back to you promptly.
