Act II, Scene 3

Nightclub. Tables: a) Gothboy and Catty Goth, b) Karla, Adam, and Metal Girl, c) Artsy Goth and Fetish Girl.

(enter Cai and Sindi. Cai immediately goes over to table (c). Adam intercepts Sindi.)

Adam:
Sindi, are you alright?

Sindi:
What, so you're allowed to talk to me again?

Adam:
Sindi, don't be that way! I heard you collapsed or something. I was worried about you.

Sindi:
I'm fine. (looks over toward Karla. Karla looks away.) How are you doing?

Adam:
Fine.

Sindi:
That's good. (walks by him toward Cai's table. Cai seems slightly surprised that she's there.) Can I sit here?

Cai:
Sure. (gestures beside one of the girls who's on either side of him.)

Karla:
Well, I told you that would happen.

Adam:
What? (Karla points at Cai and Sindi.) Well, I don't know. Just because they're sitting together doesn't necessarily mean...

Karla:
Oh come on, with their track records? You even said so yourself.

Adam:
I said Cai was sleazy.

Metal:
He just flirts a lot. That doesn't necessarily mean he's sleazy.

Adam:
He is sleazy though! He hits on Karla, practically in front of me, when he knows that we're together and that she doesn't like him! Not to mention his whole personal situation! You can't get much sleazier than that.

Karla:
Oh, I know. The nerve! He tries to pick me up and yet he's constantly talking shit about us.

Metal:
Well, technically he's just talking shit about Adam, Karla. I don't think he's got anything against you other than your taste in guys. Hadn't you noticed that he can't keep his eyes off your chest?

Karla:
Really?

Adam:
That's even worse! What the... I should tell him to--

Karla:
Now now dear, I can take care of myself.

Adam:
But...

Karla:
Relax. If you went after every other guy who looked at me, well... (laughs. Adam looks dismayed) It's nothing to worry about. The point is that he's a skank. And as for Sindi, well, it's like you said--

Adam:
(cuts her off) Yeah, well maybe. I try not to think about it too much.

Karla:
It's probably better that way.

Artsy:
Hey Sindi, you're awfully quiet.

Cai:
Yeah well, she used up her daily allotment of banter while we were getting ready. (Artsy Goth and Fetish Girl chuckle) So what's new with you? Are you still having all those problems with what's-his-name?

Artsy:
Yeah. It's basically over. I just haven't told him yet.

Cai:
Over, huh?

Artsy:
Are you making fun of me, Cai?

Cai:
Well, it's been like seven times now. Are you going for eight or something?

Artsy:
Oh shut up. (gets up and goes to the bar.)

Fetish:
Nice going, Mr. Sensitivity.

Cai:
(shrugs) She'll be back. They all come back eventually.

Fetish:
Why is that, I wonder?

Cai:
(laughs) You know why.

Fetish:
Yes, I do...

(Sindi gets up to go to the bar. Artsy Goth goes to sit with Catty Goth and Gothboy. Adam goes up to Sindi. Karla rolls her eyes.)

Adam:
Um, Sindi, can I talk to you for a minute?

Sindi:
What is it?

Adam:
I know it's probably none of my business, but, um, you're not being taken in by Cai, are you?

Sindi:
What do you mean, taken in by? Is that like, living with or going out with or sleeping with or what?

Adam:
I don't know. Any of those things.

Sindi:
I'm his roommate. Why? (enter Gelal, but carefully - he is avoiding Cai)

Adam:
You know that he's got a bad habit of making girls think they're special and then dumping them, huh?

Sindi:
It's not like he's the only one.

Adam:
Sindi... I'm sorry...

Sindi:
You know what I like about Cai, Adam? He never claimed he wasn't a jerk.

Adam:
Fair enough, I guess. If you're into that. I mean, I said before, I never meant to hurt you.

Sindi:
(tensely) I know.

Adam:
I mean, I don't like seeing you get hurt. Which is why--

Sindi:
Adam, you don't even know what's going on between Cai and I. So why don't you just stay out of it?

Adam:
So there is something going on? Come on Sindi, you can be honest with me.

Sindi:
Well... (shrugs) I mean, if you want honesty, I wish there was more going on. I think he's pretty hot, and everyone else seems to get a turn with him, so I wouldn't mind having one, especially since he's right there all the time now. But it's not like I would ever date him or expect anything emotional from him. I'm really not in the mood to get hurt again right away. That's about it, really. So is there still a problem or are you done pretending to be my friend again now?

Adam:
I guess I'm done. (goes back to Karla. Sindi starts to go back to Cai. But before she gets there, Cai and Fetish Girl stand up.)

Cai:
Hey Sindi. I'm thinking of heading out early here. I'll give you cab money so you can get home though.

Sindi:
Um, okay... (takes the money from him) Can I not just leave now too?

Cai:
I don't think you want to do that. I won't really be in a position to entertain you at home. I'm - ahem - going to bed early. (Fetish Girl laughs)

Sindi:
Oh. Okay.

(Cai leans closer to her)

Cai:
Do you have a mirror?

Sindi:
Yeah. I'll be okay.

Cai:
Okay then. See you later. (He and Fetish Girl leave. Sindi goes back to their table and sits down alone. Karla and Adam whisper about this.)

Gelal:
(from periphery) Sindi...

Sindi:
(gasps and pulls out her mirror)

Gelal:
That won't do you any good. I'm just a voice in your mind right now. Just one of many voices, compelling, deceiving, threatening, and sometimes enticing. It's just that you've learned to distinguish my voice from those of the rest of my kind.

Sindi:
(gazes about furtively, assumes a defensive posture) Stay away...

Gelal:
How did you feel when I touched you? When I touch your flesh I can see things inside of you. All the pretty faces that betray and their shallow rationales. Could you see inside of me?

Sindi:
I don't want to...

Gelal:
I could sense you, straining not to look, yet compelled nonetheless. The endless depths of depravity. You're thoroughly convinced now that I'm not human, aren't you?

Sindi:
I hate you.

Gelal:
Good. I can't wait to see how you feel after I'm done with you. If you'll be coherent enough then to feel anything. You've felt my touch. Can you imagine it from the inside?

(Sindi covers her face. Artsy Goth goes over to her.)

Artsy:
Um, are you okay?

Sindi:
I'm... fine. How are you?

Artsy:
Fine. The music's pretty good tonight. It's too bad that Cai left so early. But I guess... (notices Sindi's falling expression) Hey, you aren't upset about something to do with him, are you?

Sindi:
Not really. I'm just... in a weird situation.

Artsy:
Oh yeah?

Sindi:
Yeah: it's like, everyone I'm actually interested in is keeping their distance, and one person who I'm really not interested in at all is stalking me.

Artsy:
Wow, that's like the story of my life. Is the stalker anyone I know?

Sindi:
Probably not. Um, I think I need another drink. Or two.

Artsy:
Sounds like a plan - you could probably use it.

(Sindi gets up, compact still in hand, and goes to the bar. Adam tries to catch her eye - she sees but still ignores him.)

Sindi:
(to self) Oh yeah Adam, it's all about Cai, isn't it? Clearly that's what I'm all mopey about! Like you really have any idea of the kind of problems I have. Like you really care.

Gelal:
I care. In my own sick, ill-meaning way, that is.

Sindi:
I've got a mirror. I'll be okay...

Gelal:
And whenever you need me, Sindi, I promise I will be there for you.

(blackout)
