Act II, Scene 4

Cai's apartment.

(Cai is sitting on the couch, talking on the phone. Enter Sindi.)

Cai:
Okay. Yeah, I guess I'll see you Saturday. Oh wait, before you go - can I talk to your roommate for a minute? (pause) Whattaya mean she doesn't want to talk to me? Because... Hey, I heard that. Tell her I heard that. I'm not a loser. What the fuck?

Sindi:
Hey.

Cai:
Hey. Hang on a minute, okay? (pause. Sindi becomes ever more fidgety over the course of what follows.) Ah, so you are going to talk to me. And how are you doing... What? Why is it none of my business? I do so care. Hey, I did not just call to make fun of you. I was talking to... (suddenly more serious) Oh. Well, I hadn't heard about that. I'm sorry. I... (makes a face) Whattaya mean, 'no I'm not'? Yes I am! Look... I told you, I hadn't heard. I'm not up on all the stupid-ass gossip, okay? Although on the other hand I guess I'm not surprised, since he's fucked it up before (Sindi looks at Cai, suddenly attentive) - hey, don't hang up. Listen to me - don't cry - just listen. Do you want to get revenge - give him a taste of his own medicine? Do you? Cause if you do, I'd love to help, if you know what I mean. (snorts/laughs) You don't know where I've been! That's a good one! Well, whatever. I know you're thinking about it. (laughs again) You hate me? No you don't. I'll see you at the club, okay? Bye.

Sindi:
Who was that?

Cai:
Doesn't matter.

Sindi:
Okay...

Cai:
You know, you've been acting kind of weird lately.

Sindi:
(sits down right beside him) Well... the demon is still bothering me. I've been having nightmares.

Cai:
I figured. (pats her on the shoulder and moves to sit in an adjacent chair instead.) I wish I could help you more.

Sindi:
Yeah.

Cai:
There's something else though, isn't there?

Sindi:
(sighs) I'm not sure I can explain this very well.

Cai:
Give it a try.

Sindi:
Well... lately when we're at the bar I sort of feel like you're avoiding me.

Cai:
Which time at the bar exactly? The time I left early with what's-her-name?

Sindi:
(laughs uneasily) Cai, that doesn't really narrow down what week it was.

Cai:
(laughs) No, I guess not. But why would you think I'm avoiding you? I mean, we see each other all the time.

Sindi:
I know. It's just... well, maybe it's just me... but it seems to me like when we're at the club... (sighs) this is going to sound stupid.

Cai:
(shrugs) We'll never know if you don't say it.

Sindi:
Okay. Well... (quickly) I guess it seems to me like you're touching and flirting with all these other girls, but whenever I get anywhere near you, you either blow me off or get up and go somewhere else. And, you know, seeing as how I'm a girl too, I was just wondering why that is.

Cai:
Huh. I hadn't even noticed that. (Sindi looks down) Hey, don't get upset. Although I don't know why you would be. I mean, do you think you're missing out on the status associated with hanging off of me or something?

Sindi:
No. I don't need a guy to make me feel valid or whatever it is that most girls need. I'm just wondering. I mean, do you think I'm really unattractive or something? Or do you think I sound bitchy, or maybe that I'm trying too hard?

Cai:
(shrugs) Do you care that much about what I think?

Sindi:
I only care about what people think if I want something.

Cai:
(sort of amused.) Um, okay. Dare I ask what you want then?

Sindi:
Cai, do you have some kind of personal rule about not sleeping with roommates?

Cai:
Huh? Oh... I see... (smirks) Sindi, I never knew you cared! I mean, whenever I saw you at the club before, you sit by yourself, you don't really talk to people and you're one of the most, you know, fully covered girls there. I didn't think I was your type. Especially since you like Adam. Or liked. Or whatever.

Sindi:
Well, I haven't been with anyone since then...

Cai:
So you're frustrated.

Sindi:
Yes.

Cai:
Hmmm.

Sindi:
What?

Cai:
I'm debating whether I should unfrustrate you or just laugh at you.

Sindi:
Cai! (hits/shoves him playfully) You really are a jerk, you know!

Cai:
I know. And yet you're still desperately curious about what you're missing out on.

Sindi:
Yeah, well... (looks away from/turns her back on him) I'll probably find out that you're not any good and then I'll just feel stupid.

Cai:
That sounds like a challenge. (moves to put his arms around her. Leans close to her and smirks.) So do you want the couch or the bed?

Sindi:
Wha... just like that, huh?

Cai:
Just like that. So...?

Sindi:
Uh, the bed, I guess.

Cai:
Suits me fine.

(He picks her up. They exit, i.e. Into Cai's room)
