Act I, Scene 1

Nightclub. Tables: a) Sindi b) Gothboy and Catty Goth c) Cai, Metal Girl and Fetish Girl. Sindi's table is beside the bar.

(Enter Adam. Cai's table ignores him, others look. He goes to sit at table (b) and greets his friends there. Sindi seems disappointed. When Adam goes to get a drink, he's near her. Sindi reaches over to him.)

Sindi:
Hey, how's it going?

Adam:
I'm alright. Good music tonight, huh? (Sindi nods) How are you?

Sindi:
Not bad. I'll be around a lot more now that I'm not working weekends.

Adam:
Well that's alright, huh? By the way, you look really good tonight.

Sindi:
Thanks. So do you. I haven't seen you get all dressed up in awhile.

Adam:
Yeah, well, Karla doesn't like it when my make-up looks better than hers. What can you do?

Sindi:
Yeah... (glances back toward table (b)) Is she coming out tonight?

Adam:
Yeah. But you know how it is with her. She's always late. (shrugs) At least lately she's actually been showing up when she says she's going to though, as opposed to just not coming at all.

Sindi:
Hmm. How are things going with her?

Adam:
Oh, the usual - you know, pretty good. We had another fight the other day about how she doesn't like me going out without her--

Sindi:
Ever?

Adam:
--but I can sort of understand. And on Wednesday she got cranky because I told Cai to leave her alone. She said I was being overbearing.

Sindi:
(rolls eyes) You're overbearing?

Adam:
Well, maybe I am, I don't know. (laughs nervously) But hey, other than that it's been okay. I like spending time with her - she's a fun person. Not that you're not. But, um, yeah.

Sindi:
(she catches him as he starts to walk away.) Hey Adam. Why don't you sit down for a bit? We haven't gotten to talk all that much in awhile.

Adam:
I don't know - she'll probably be here any minute. You know how she gets if I'm sitting with some other girl.

Sindi:
(shrugs) So, we're sitting together. Big deal. Don't you think she's a little excessively territorial?

Adam:
I don't know. (smiles awkwardly) I kind of get the impression that you don't just want to sit with me...

Sindi:
I'd like to see you more. But I like just talking with you too. I consider you a close friend. I mean, we've known each other for years.

Adam:
And you're my friend too, Sindi. But hey, I'll catch you later, okay?

Sindi:
Sure... (leans close) Can I just ask you a quick question though?

Adam:
Um... (glances around) ...sure.

Sindi:
Are you still free on Tuesday night?

Adam:
As far as I know. (smiles) But I'll talk to you about it later. I'm definitely still interested - especially with you looking as good as you do right now - but I have to be cautious. You understand, don't you?

Sindi:
Of course. I'll talk to you later then.

(Adam nods and sits back down at table (b). Enter Karla. She and Adam embrace and kiss. Sindi looks away.)

Karla:
Hi Adam. Have I missed anything?

Adam:
No, just the usual overplayed crap that they always play around this time. Heh. (Sindi rolls her eyes)

Karla:
(chuckles) Adam, can you be a sweetheart and buy me some absinthe?

Adam:
I don't know. I'm kind of short on--

Karla:
Oh, come on, please?

Adam:
Oh, okay. Hang on.

(Adam goes to the bar. Sindi tries to make eye-contact with him but he looks away. He gets the drink and returns to the table.)

Karla:
Isn't that cute? Miss Salvation Army over there was looking at you.

Catty:
Did you see what she's wearing this week? What trash bag did she pull that out of?

(Enter Gelal. He wears a masquerade mask and black gloves. No one looks at him except for Cai.)

Adam:
I think she's going for the Batcave look.

Karla:
She looks like a Mansonite. Is she still trying to talk to you - as if it'll get her anywhere?

(Gelal floats along the periphery. He and Sindi briefly make eye contact. She looks away.)

Adam:
Well, I mean, she's a nice person...

Gothboy:
... but unfortunately, nice people don't always have fashion sense. Oh well, what can you do?

(Gelal starts to move toward Sindi's table.)

Catty:
This bar should have a dress code.

Karla:
No kidding. And we'd be the perfect people to model it after. Don't you think?

Catty:
Oh, well, obviously.

Adam:
(laughs nervously) Yeah well... you always look great, Karla...

(Gelal sits down at Sindi's table.)

Gelal:
Are you feeling alright, darling?

Sindi:
I'm... fine. But I'd kind of like to be alone right now.

Gelal:
You seem to spend a lot of time here alone.

Sindi:
Yeah, so?

Gelal:
If you were to disappear, would anyone notice?

Sindi:
What the hell kind of question is that?

Gelal:
I was just wondering about your safety.

Sindi:
Why? Do you think I'm a poor, vulnerable girl in need of your protection or something?

Gelal:
No. It's more a question of whether anyone would protect you from me.

Sindi:
Look, no offense, but the last person I want to talk to right now is a self-admitted creep, okay?

(Sindi gets up and walks away. Gelal follows. Sindi turns around.)

Sindi:
Excuse me, do you not take hints?

Gelal:
What are you hinting at?

Sindi:
That I want to be alone! God...

(Gelal nods and steps away. Lights out in his vicinity - he disappears. Sindi goes to the bar.)

Sindi:
Isn't that always the way? The only people whose attention I can get are the ones who I don't even want near me. Meanwhile the ones I do want to talk to are too preoccupied with their clingy girlfriends. (Looks back at Adam in frustration.) Wake up, Adam: don't you want more out of a relationship than shallow banter and endless arguments? I don't even know why I come here anymore. (sighs) Well at least I'm not just moping about it at home like a loser.

(Sindi gets her drink and sits down. Gelal reappears but just stares at her from across the club. She looks back. He nods at her, then vanishes again.)

Sindi:
(rolls her eyes) Creep. I hope he doesn't start coming regularly.

(blackout)
