Act I, Scene 4

Nightclub. Tables: a) Sindi, b) Karla, Catty Goth and Metal Girl, c) Cai, Fetish Girl and Artsy Goth.

Catty:
Oh my God, Karla. Adam's such a prick - I can't believe he'd do that to you.

Karla:
(crying) I know. It's awful isn't it? And then people wonder why I'm jealous.

Metal:
So is it over between you and him then?

Karla:
Oh, I don't know. I think he really loves me, deep down, but he's just confused or something. Probably because she's toying with him and saying things against me!

Catty:
I can't believe Adam would listen to her. I mean, she's nobody. Just look at her. All she does is sit there by herself.

(enter Gelal. He and Sindi look at one another across the bar.)

Karla:
Oh, I can't believe he'd even be tempted by her! It's just sick, isn't it?

Metal:
I'd tell him to go fuck himself if I were you.

Karla:
It's not that easy though! What am I going to do?

Catty:
I think you should tell him it's over. You can totally do better than him.

Metal:
He's not supposed to get here until later, isn't he? Have a few more drinks. I always find it makes breakups easier.

Karla:
Maybe you're right.

Catty:
Here, I'll come too.

(Karla sighs and marches over toward the bar with her friend. Sindi braces herself, as she doesn't want to get up and move but also doesn't like Karla coming this close to her. At the same time, Gelal comes and sits down at Sindi's table.)

Gelal:
Good evening, Sindi. (She looks away. He laughs.) You're wondering how you can get me to go away, aren't you? Have you tried calling the police?

Sindi:
Why can't you just leave me alone?

Catty:
Oh my God, I think she's talking to herself. What a loser.

Karla:
I always thought she was a freak.

Gelal:
You see? It's like I said. They can't see me. Only you can.

Sindi:
(more quietly) Uh huh. Whatever.

Gelal:
So have you thought anymore about what I said?

Sindi:
Look, I'm really not interested in anything you have to say...

Catty:
Excuse me? We're just here getting drinks. You think you're important enough for us to talk to you?

Sindi:
Um, I wasn't talking to you...

Karla:
Who else could you be talking to? And what is it you think I'm going to say? I don't have anything to say to you, except that you're a trashy slut.

Sindi:
What?

Karla:
Don't play stupid with me. Adam told me what you did. And you did it right before I came over too! At least he has a conscience!

Sindi:
Karla, I...

Gelal:
You were being so careful, weren't you? Only to be foiled by his weakness yet again...

Sindi:
(looks at Gelal) Can't you just leave me alone?

Catty:
(rolls eyes) Gladly. Come on Karla.

Karla:
No, I don't think I'm quite done yet. (Sets her drink down on Sindi's table and sits down in Gelal's place - she doesn't see him. He quickly moves aside.) Maybe I do want to talk to you. Maybe I want to understand what your problem is! I mean, can you not get a boyfriend of your own? Is that why you steal other peoples'?

Sindi:
I'm not interested in going out with him.

Catty:
(disgusted sound) God, what a whore! (storms back to their table and talks to Metal Girl, ostensibly about what's just happened. Cai extricates himself from the girls around him and goes to get a drink.)

Karla:
Oh, so you just go around sleeping with people and fucking things up for fun? Is that it? Is that what your problem is?

Sindi:
No. I'm not trying to--

Karla:
You're not trying to what? You bitch! You're doing a pretty good job of screwing up my life! Oh... (starts crying. Cai turns around briefly.) ... why are you doing this to me?

Sindi:
Karla, just because I like Adam doesn't mean I do things because I hate you.

Karla:
He's supposed to be with me!

Sindi:
Well... if you're unhappy and he's unhappy, have you ever considered--

Karla:
What do you know about it?! He doesn't love you!

Cai:
Are you two arguing about Adam?

Sindi:
So it seems...

Karla:
You mind your own business Cai!

Cai:
Why do you bother? He's just another whiny little poet boy who doesn't know who he is if he isn't in the middle of some kind of personal crisis. Then again, you two probably have a lot in common there.

Karla:
I told you to mind your own business! Why are you always so mean to me?

Cai:
Because I think you're stupid. I mean, taking Adam over me - come on.

Karla:
I would never touch you, Cai! You're an insensitive asshole! The only girls who would sleep with you are sluts. (to Sindi) Why don't you go after him, you tramp! Or have you already?

Sindi:
Um...

Cai:
If you're into Adam, I'd be way more than you can handle. Besides, I'm busy. (goes back toward his girls) Don't let me interrupt your little cat fight.

Karla:
Oh... (crying) It's not fair! Everyone hates me!

Sindi:
Karla, I'm sure that's not true. I mean, you've got more friends than I do.

Karla:
Well... I guess that's true. (straightens up a bit) Oh, I just wish Adam would hurry up and get here. I need to talk to him. I shouldn't have just stormed out when he told me. We should have talked then! Oh, I can't stand to lose him. I'm sure we can work something out... (gets up) I still don't like you at all! But, um, thanks for listening.

Sindi:
Uh huh.

(Gelal sits back down)

Gelal:
Why did you do that?

Sindi:
Do what?

Gelal:
Reassure her. Don't you want to hurt her?

Sindi:
No. What's the point? It's not like she would learn anything from that.

Gelal:
Do you think she'll learn anything this way?

Sindi:
I don't know. Probably not. Look, why do you keep talking to me? I told you I wanted you to leave me alone. (Cai looks at her from across the bar.)

Gelal:
You are alone. Alone in a sea of well-meaning fools. Or have you forgotten?

Sindi:
Stop talking to me.

Gelal:
Adam is already forgetting you, like all of those others in your past whose priorities were elsewhere. Your friends cast their lots in with your catty ex-girlfriend - one by one they've all abandoned you, whatever their excuses. And even your parents love their precious Jehovah more than they do you.

Sindi:
That's none of your fucking business!

Gelal:
Ah, but your misery is my business, Sindi. I've watched you through all of your disappointments. How does it feel to be drowning in the mediocre failings of others? It all feels so meaningless, doesn't it? (Sindi closes her eyes. Gelal gently touches her. She cringes.) Think about the question I asked you, Sindi. What do you hate most in life, and what do you really want? In secret moments you pray to meet even one person who is not a hypocrite. (leans close and whispers) Be careful what you wish for. Even though I am fallen, I just may be the angel that you seek.

(Gelal walks away, then disappears into darkness. Cai watches this. He gets up to get another drink. Enter Gothboy)

Gothboy:
Hey Karla. Adam and I just got here. He's sitting in the cafe down the block. He thought you'd rather talk to him there instead of here with the loud music. What do you think?

Karla:
Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. (She exits. Gothboy sits down with Catty Goth. Cai is at the bar now, near Sindi.)

Catty:
Oh my God. You wouldn't believe what happened earlier with Sindi. Now it's even more obvious than ever why she has no friends...

(Sindi gets up quickly. She nearly bumps into Cai.)

Cai:
Hey, where are you going? I'm sorry about that before. Karla and I--

Sindi:
I'm sorry, I really don't feel well, I have to go.

(She pushes past him and exits. Gelal comes out of the shadows again, i.e. To pursue.)

Cai:
Hey! (He moves to pursue Gelal.) You in the mask. (Once Gelal realizes Cai is addressing him, he backs away.) Hang on a minute, were you bothering her? Hey--

(Gelal disappears again.)

Cai:
(raises his voice) Yeah, that's right, go back to hell then! (Others look at him as if there's something wrong with him. He ignores them and goes back to his table. The girls seem concerned. Cai shrugs it off.)

Gothboy:
What was that all about?

Catty:
Who knows? He's probably just having one of his stupid flashbacks again.
