The Daemons
There are twelve major Daemons who are recognized by virtually all Tenebrae. Thousands of lesser Daemons also exist; Thiyavat and Lazrathoth are both considered amongst their number. (At least by the Daemons themselves; certain Inquisitional minions of theirs may differ on the matter...)
Notes:
- Below I refer to mages, wizards, witches and sorceror/sorceresses. Amongst the Tenebrae, 'mage' is a general term for a magical practitioner. Wizards are mages whose magic is based upon compulsion. Witches are mages whose magic is based upon persuasion. Most wizards are male and most witches female, but such is not necessarily the case in all instances. Finally, sorceror/esses are mages of either gender whose magic is based upon inducing Daemonic possession in themselves. If the mage - Sin or Jairus for example - is already a Daemon in human form, by default they practice sorcery.
- I also make reference to "Spheres." For an explanation of what this means, click here for details.
Major Daemons
Ghenubis
- Always dressed in a long, hooded robe, winged like a raven, face hidden by an elaborate, beaked mask, this Daemon's gender is uncertain. One of the oldest Daemons, Necronoctists associate Ghenubis with death and the practices and rites of necromancy. Seldom called upon other than by practitioners of that particular 'art,' not least because Ghenubis' muteness adds to his/her unknowability. Creator of the Wraiths.
Title: The Disintegrator
Element: Water
Zodiac Animal: Raven
Bloodline: Sepulchraal
Sphere: Kliphos
Similar Deities: Hades (Greek), Anubis (Egyptian)

Ishanis
- Strong and gorgeous, she has long, wavy auburn hair and an athletic but feminine body. Ishanis has the emerald wings and horns of a Dragon, the Kimerae which she created. She is as charismatic as her brother, Zacavellos, but his opposite in her concern with fighting honorably for justice. The Empress of the Tenebrae is Ishanis' representative amongst humans, an apt incarnation of her pride and power. Called upon by mages to bless new endeavors and strengthen oneself and one's allies. It was Ishanis who granted honorary Daemon-hood to both Lazrathoth and Thiyavat.
Title: The Lady
Element: Air
Zodiac Animal: Serpent
Bloodline: Invokasha
Sphere: Ophidia
Similar Deities: Inanna (Babylonian), Isis (Egyptian)

Rhazimesh
- Patron of wizardry, he appears as a typical bearded and robed wizard, with long grey hair. He has pointed ears and the black wings of a bat. Sagely and generally good-natured, but somewhat domineering at times. Creator of the Imps. Called upon by wizards to add strength to their spells.
Title: The Father

Zodiac Animal: Bat
Bloodline: Evoceshi
Sphere: Satyrus
Similar Deities: Hermes (Greek), Thoth (Egyptian)

Chayldemet
- Patron of witchcraft, she is ancient, wise and very patient. Like her mate Rhazimesh, she has long grey hair. Her wings are those of an owl. Her children include Zacavellos, Aethamaat, Ishanis, Ostiruz and Kothamaru. The former two were sired by Rhazimesh, the second two by Xura-Shido, and the last by Zacavellos, who tricked his mother into sleeping with him. Chayldemet also created the Lilim. Called upon by witches to add potency to their spells.
Title: The Mother
Element: Earth
Zodiac Animal: Owl
Bloodline: Nocturne
Sphere: Xastri
Similar Deities: Demeter, Hecate (both Greek)

Xura-Shido
- A wandering poet-warrior, with a long grey beard and only one good eye. He has the ears and claws of a wolf. Outwardly light-hearted and bold, he can also be aloof and mysterious. Xura-Shido created the Wolven. He is adulated by bards, mercenaries and others who lead a nomadic lifestyle. He grants mages the powers of clairvoyance, divination and insight into hidden matters. Also aids in poetic inspiration. He is the inventor of the Tenebrae runic system.
Title: The Wanderer
Element: Thunder (Air/Water)
Zodiac Animal: Wild Dog
Bloodline: Drakken
Sphere: Orgone
Similar Deities: Odin (Norse), Prometheus (Greek)

Kothamaru
- Chayldemet's son by Zacavellos. Mid-twenties in appearance, bald with a goattee, muscular, plenty of piercings and tattoos, and the wings of an eagle. A warlike trouble-maker and boastful loud-mouth, but ultimately honorable despite his father's (brother's?) influence. Creator of the Griffins. He is called upon to destroy enemies and and to sever ties. He does not trust Lazrathoth - having fought against him when Lazrathoth was still the Luminary Lazramael - and goes on about it to whoever will listen.
Title: The Warrior
Element: Metal (Earth/Fire)
Zodiac Animal: Eagle
Bloodline: Anatheme
Sphere: Halcyn
Similar Deities: Aries (Greek), Thor (Norse)

Ekolti
- Son of Sekiro-Basti and... someone. He has convinced himself that his father is Zacavellos, but more in order to be a nuissance than on the basis of any firm evidence. A child on the verge of puberty, with scraggly, spikey green hair, pointed ears and a rat's tail. Full of curiousity and mischief, he is continually playing tricks on others and getting into trouble. Creator of the Hobs, who look not unlike pocket-sized versions of himself. Called upon to promote mischief and disruption, as well as in matters of chance and (perhaps unwisely) love.
Title: The Trickster
Element: Light (Fire/Air)
Zodiac Animal: Rat
Bloodline: Chicaneri
Sphere Lux (The Sun)
Similar Deities: Coyote (Native American), Eshu (Voodoo)

Sekiro-Basti
- Daughter of Ishanis and Ostiruz, twin sister of Malazacha. Her chin-length bobbed hair is streaked in several colors, not unlike a tortoise-shell cat - an animal whose ears and tail she has also. A shameless libertine with a variety of whimsical and perverse interests, which include creating decadent artwork and seducing other Daemons (or, if possible, other Angels as well). Capable of deep insight but also astounding pettiness, she is known to be frivolous and moody. Sekiro-Basti is the creator of the Simurgs, who appear as cats with metallic-feathered wings.* Patron of artists and actors, called upon for artistic inspiration and to disguise with illusion. Also called upon to sexually ensnare men.
* I know this isn't what Simurgs traditionally are - if anyone knows of a decent-sounding fantasy-beast name for 'flying cats' I wouldn't mind hearing it.
Title: The Muse
Element: Water
Zodiac Animal: Cat
Bloodline: Fantasmaal
Sphere: Mera
Similar Deities: Freya (Norse), Bastet (Egyptian)

Aethamaat
- Daughter of Chayldemet and Rhazimesh. She appears slightly older than Kothamaru, and is perhaps one of the least human-looking of the Daemons, for she has two extra pairs of arms (eight limbs total) and eight eyes like a spider. Her red hair is very short, and she has a boyish build. She is the creator of the Beholders. She is associated with the creation of wards and sigils which repel the curious and maintain secrecy. Aethamaat is extremely intelligent and very impatient with humans who do not 'catch on' quickly.
Title: The Sage
Element: Fire
Zodiac Animal: Spider
Bloodline: Ominys
Sphere: Caleda
Similar Deities: Athena, Artemis (both Greek)

Zacavellos
- Beautiful but sinister, he appears as a man in his prime, slender, clean-shaven, with white hair just past his chin in length. His gossamer wings were shredded in an altercation with his sister, Ishanis. Creator of the Basilisks, whose paralyzing gaze he also possesses, and patron of the Necronoctist Inquisition. Called upon by mages to curse, to weaken enemies and to bind them to one's will. Infamously known as one of the most dangerous Daemons to deal with, for his charisma adds to his manipulative abilities, and it amuses him to toy with humans (often through the use of the Inquisition). Despite Ishanis' declaration, he denies that Lazrathoth and Thiyavat 'count' as Daemons, and holds their ex-Luminary origins against them. Ironically though, it is Zacavellos' resemblance to Lazramael's Luminary form - a beautiful man with long white hair - that contributes to the Celesti belief that the Tenebrae in fact worship the Fallen One.
Title: The Cardinal
Element: Darkness (Water/Earth)
Zodiac Animal: Fly
Bloodline: Yntrigu
Sphere: Silene (The Moon)
Similar Deities: Set (Egyptian), Tezcatlipoca (Aztec)

Malazacha
- Daughter of Ishanis and Ostiruz, twin sister of Sekiro-Basti. A vampish woman in her late teens, with long black hair. Despite her insectine traits, which include antenae, gossamer wings and multifaceted eyes, she is possessed of a haunting beauty. She was abducted by Zacavellos when very young, and over time has been corrupted by his affections/abuse. Patron of prostitutes and creator of the Lamiae. When called upon, she assists in sexually ensnaring women but may also offer women healing powers. Her personality is of a similarly dual nature, alternating between the shallow, flirtatious but heartless vixen (usually toward men) and the anguished yet sisterly survivor (usually toward women).
Title: The Harlot
Element: Earth
Zodiac Animal: Mantis
Bloodline: Mesmeru
Sphere: Tellura
Similar Deities: Ereshkigal (Babylonian), Persephone (Greek)

Ostiruz
- Patron of sorcerors. Ishanis' brother and mate, sire of the twins Malazacha and Sekiro-Basti. He is fragile and androgynous in appearance, with long orchid hair and the wings of a moth. Like Ishanis, he appears in the prime of his life. Ostiruz speaks only in enigmatic phrases, and his alien demeanor - aggravated, perhaps, by peering into the Abyss a few too many times - makes him one of the least 'human-seeming' Daemons. He created the Faeries. Sorcerors and sorceresses call upon Ostiruz to strengthen their workings.
Title: The Consort
Element: Air
Zodiac Animal: Moth
Bloodline: Fey
Sphere: Faera
Similar Deities: Tammuz (Babylonian), Osiris (Egyptian)
