Biography
As a Naia, Ymaeya had long lived distant from other Angels of all kinds, and had believed she could keep out of Enuzir's games. But she was captured by the Luminaries and dismembered to provide energy to aid in Enuzir's efforts to cut Rhadixe off from the upper worlds (circa Second Aeon, 1700s). As with Thiyavat (Sin Invokasha), a fragment of Ymaeya's consciousness survived (the Luminaries were more concerned with simply taking her energy, uninterested in whether she survived or not) and became incarnate as Kiyoko Toubai.
Aware of Jairus' renown as an avowed enemy of Enuzir, Kiyoko sought him out in Rhadixe. In the process, she met Sin. The two became friends, united in a cause to thwart Enuzir. Eventually they became lovers as well. Together with Jairus, the three of them attempted to stand against Enuzir, to stop him from cutting Rhadixe off from the source of magic in the upper worlds. In the aftermath of that failed attempt, Kiyoko was badly injured, which further prevented her from following up on Sin's fate.
Like Jairus, Kiyoko came to believe that Sin perished. She became severely depressed and in some ways neurotic, all the more haunted by what the Luminaries had done to her in the past. For hundreds of years she wandered from place to place, making a pittance from telling fortunes and playing music, but mostly losing herself in drink, drugs and other indulgences.
By the present-day of the novel, Kiyoko has regained some direction by involving herself in social and political causes, but some of her addictions remain problematic. She has long fantasized about Sin somehow coming back to her, but never imagined it would actually come to pass. Whether their reunion will prove all that she hoped for, however, is another question.
