Here is a list of some works that I have found to be inspirational in the conceptualization and/or writing of the novel:
- Books
- For conceptualizing Anihkesh:
- Grace Jantzen - Becoming Divine (which I also used for my PhD thesis)
- Catherine Keller - Face of the Deep, Apocalypse Now and Then (which I also used for my MA thesis)
- Melissa Raphael - The Female Face of God in Auschwitz
For the layout of the worlds, conceptualization of the Nameless One, angels, etc.:
- Hakim Bey - T.A.Z.
- Lon Milo Duquette - The Chicken Qabalah of Rabbi Lamed Ben Clifford, Angels, Demons and Gods of the New Millennium
- Kenneth Grant - The Nightside of Eden
- Assorted Kabbalah-relatead books by Daniel Matt, so many that I'm not sure of exact titles
- Elliott Wolfson - Venturing Beyond
- ? - The Book of Enoch
For the Necroknostic religion:
- Karen McCarthy Brown - Mama Lola
- Anton LaVey - The Satanic Bible
For aesthetics, e.g. look of certain characters, combination of magic/science in the world, etc.:
- Tanith Lee - Blood Opera Series, especially Dark Dance
- Michael Swanwick - Iron Dragon's Daughter
- Music
- These are cases where the whole album is a significant inspiration in terms of mood, as opposed to specific songs/lyrics as per the subcultural references page.
- Bella Morte - Before the Flood, Remains, Where Shadows Lie
- Bio-Tek - Punishment for Decadence, The Ceremony of Innocence, Darkness My Name Is, A God Ignored is a Demon Born
- Bruce Dickinson - The Chemical Wedding, Accident of Birth
- Dargaard - The Dissolution of Eternity
- Marilyn Manson - Antichrist Superstar
- Soil & Eclipse - Necromancy, Meridian, Purity
- Stromkern - Dammerung im Traum, Armageddon, Light It Up
- Symphony X - Paradise Lost
- Therion - Lemuria / Sirius B
- Wench - Wench
- Various - Witchcraft
- Other
- An inspirations page for this novel would not be complete without a nod to vintage Squaresoft video games, such as Final Fantasy VI (which I am aware is another story that also involves the coexistence of magic and technology, an apocalyptic scenario, an unusually large number of main characters, a superhuman female protagonist that some power-mad male character created to be a weapon, and a flamboyant villain who wears more makeup than the average Western male. :) )
